Same story as “Sshhh” and “Bird Box”, In this movie you can speak (loudly).But you can see, which is different by Netflix.
The Silence mutes any and all brain activity, sending viewers into a quiet sleep. “Shhhh! Be vewy vewy quiet! I’m hunting carnivewous ancient bats!”. For even the most minuscule of noises will send a swarm of ‘Pitch Black’ ‘Doctor Who’-esque bat demons that will scratch, bite and gnaw at your flesh. Based on a novel apparently, however any and all originality was tossed out of the family car window when both the superior ‘A Quiet Place’ and hugely popular ‘Bird Box’ were capitalising on the whole “sense prevention” horror schtick. Basically, it’s both those films put together. Ancient bat creatures are released from an uncharted cave system and are terrorising the continent of North America, where we follow a family trying to survive and reach a refuge.

Problem is, this family is so chilled and relaxed during this heightened state of emergency, that any and all threat is relinquished from the nonchalant acting and careless attitudes. Urgh, honestly! Leonetti is doing his absolute best in unimaginatively mimicking other similar films, where veteran and all-round talent Tucci is waltzing around the countryside showing a face of “I can’t be bothered, release me from this torturous nightmare”.

Plagued by infuriatingly stupid plot conveniences and character choices, the severe lack of tension halts the momentum entirely. Heck, it’s not even in neutral anymore. It’s reversing! Examples include (brace yourself…): handing a handgun to the uncle who is then left to die, ginger son conveniently switching cars before one of them veers over a verge, iPhones instantly muting themselves when submerged in water for a total of three seconds and bringing an obviously loud dog with you. That last example, accompanied with an unnecessary scene involving members of the public banishing a mother and her baby due to generating far too much noise, are simply utilised to showcase the destructive nature of humanity. Yup. Humans suck, and this film wants you to know that. You shan’t be scared by the horrifically visualised bat demons that look smoother than Tucci’s bald head. It’s the characters that’ll get under your skin and infuriate you.

Need more proof? The entire third act. Father and daughter wander off to the nearest pharmacy, surprisingly making zero noise whatsoever on the way there, and encounter a mentally unstable reverend who yearns to fertilise young girls to maintain the population and chop their tongues off (after the foreplay, obviously…). What. The. Hell? That was so left field that even the flying angels didn’t see that coming. The narrative focus shifts constantly, making an already boring premise even more tediously mundane.

Aside from one sacrifice towards the conclusion that had some emotional gravitas, The Silence offers nothing more than another forced extraction of this now dull horror concept. Actors weren’t trying, direction was unstable and the insufficient amount of scares were, well, insufficient. Oh wait, I forgot! It literally ends on the daughter becoming survivalist-styled Lara Croft and hunting these winged menaces down. Oh no no! I’m done! Just watch ‘A Quiet Place’ instead…

After a day with the emotionally overwhelming CODA, a disappointing Human Factors, and a divisive Cryptozoo, I was incredibly excited to end my day with a light, straightforward, funny little take on a silly yet intriguing premise. I got exactly what I was hoping for. A harmless series of entertaining interactions and interesting soul-searching moments featuring the two versions of the main character. Despite its repetitiveness and formulaic structure, I was never uninvested in the story due to the short runtime and mainly because of the two central, phenomenal performances.

Zoe Lister-Jones and Cailee Spaeny are brilliant together, forming an aura of pure enjoyment and putting a smile on every viewers’ face. Their whimsical chemistry elevates the entire film, but it’s not just fun and laugher. Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein dive deep into the essence of Liza through heartfelt conversations and heavy debates about so many things that everyone regrets doing in their own lives but never think of making amends. From forgiving family and friends’ mistakes to accepting our own missteps and flaws, addressing unresolved personal issues on the last day on Earth should not be something people need to do, but something that should have already been done way before this final day.

Shot during the pandemic, watching a whole movie filmed in exteriors sort of works like a breath of fresh air. Some people might dislike the dozens of celebrity cameos that contribute to sketch after sketch, but I defend that these scenes always serve a certain purpose, developing the protagonist a bit more across each of these sequences. As I wrote above, the cyclic nature of the film drags down some portions of its portions, especially the never-ending wandering around, which becomes a tad boring. Shoutout to Ryan Miller’s score, though. It’s one of the most entertaining aspects of the whole thing.

How It Ends is an inoffensive, light, entertaining character-study that ultimately accomplishes its goal of being a fun introspection on the protagonist’s life. With the use of a generic plot device, Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones create a simple yet repetitive narrative featuring dozens of famous cameos in a non-stop sequence of walking in the middle of an empty street until a new character shows up to offer yet another funny moment. Nevertheless, it contains more heart and soul than what’s at the surface. Lister-Jones and Cailee Spaeny carry and elevate the entire movie on their shoulders, delivering two impressive performances that I just couldn’t take my eyes off. Despite the obvious tendency to be just an amusing, innocent film, the main character is someone everyone can relate to, which definitely makes the movie much more compelling. Doing something that people regret later is an inevitability of life, but making amends with it shouldn’t be left to an extreme chance or to the very last moment when everything is about to end… and this is a message I can get behind.

The quirky apocalypse comedy “How It Ends” is a witty and strangely optimistic story about a woman (Zoe Lister-Jones) who sets out to make peace with her past regrets and tie up loose ends on the very day a giant asteroid is scheduled to wipe out Earth. It’s an uplifting tale of learning to love yourself, even if it’s your last day in existence.

Liza (Lister-Jones) has been invited to an end of the world party, the final gathering with her friends before it’s all over. Before she can get in the zone, Liza decides she must make peace with everyone whom she has wrong or has caused her stress in her life so she can go out with a bang. Accompanied by the metaphysical version of her younger self (Cailee Spaeny), the two Lizas head out to complete the quest. There’s just a tiny little problem: her car has been stolen, so the pair must set off on foot.

The film has a brisk pacing that constantly introduces new characters, highlighting the strangers they encounter while walking around Los Angeles. There’s a great list of cameos that reads like a who’s who of indie L.A. artists (including Nick Kroll, Charlie Day, Whitney Cummings, Bobby Lee, Lamorne Morris, Fred Armisen, and Rob Huebel), and it’s a joy to see them riffing on everything from recyclables to massive drug consumption.

There’s an offbeat sensibility to the storytelling, like the matter of fact acceptance that there’s a huge asteroid hurting towards Earth (and which we see in the background during their jaunt around town), and the idea that one person would know so many random people in L.A.

The film has an eccentric, Miranda July type vibe that won’t appeal to everyone, but the sweetly unconventional “How It Ends” enchanted me with its kooky charms.

I really can’t do justice to just how thoroughly entertaining a film ‘French Exit’ is. It had me roaring and cackling with laughter, totally enchanted by its irreverence and good humour. You feel as if you’re watching a great piece of classic theatre, where silly rich white people bumble around in fancy rooms, unaware that they’re revealing, with their silly irrelevant lives, just how strange and beautiful life and love and sadness and happiness can be. Michelle Pfeiffer’s tremendous central performance, full of camp and acid and sadness, would be enough of a reason to see ‘French Exit’, but it’s all the more rewarding for how complete an experience it is. The ridiculous and the surreal are employed for the purpose for which they are always at their best – to make us laugh at how silly life can be, and sigh at the truth that, no matter what, we want to keep living regardless.

I find surreal comedy one of the most challenging subgenres to appreciate. In my experience, the humor must be pitch-perfect in order for me to actually laugh throughout the runtime of a purposefully absurd film. In addition to this, I need to feel some sort of connection with the protagonist(s). Otherwise, I’ll struggle to truly enjoy the fun inside all the chaos. I’ve never seen a movie by Azazel Jacobs (The Lovers, Terri), who brings the same screenwriter of the latter film, Patrick deWitt.

Michelle Pfeiffer delivers a phenomenal performance, showing tremendous emotional range and an acting experience that allows her to seamlessly navigate any script thrown at her. Ultimately, Pfeiffer proves that she still has what it takes to lead the biggest movies of each year. Unfortunately, I found French Exit an incredibly tough film to enjoy. From the remaining disappointing performances – Lucas Hedges is frustratingly annoying in this role – to the lack of interest in the overall narrative, it’s one of those movies that either the viewers connect with immediately, or it’s not going to be an easy watch.

Surreal comedy implies a nonsensical screenplay, which might trigger some people to dislike it from the get-go. It’s an extremely specific type of humor that doesn’t usually reach big groups of people. Azazel Jacobs brings Patrick deWitt’s screenplay to the screen with remarkable commitment, but in the end, it’s a slow, stretched-out film with not that many laughs to offer.

When a Chinese family finds out that the family’s matriarch is dying of lung cancer, complications arise. In Chinese culture, there is a saying that when you get cancer, you die. This actually boils down to the belief that it’s not the cancer that leads to the person’s death, but rather the fear of dying. As such, the family orchestrates an elaborate ruse to get everyone together for a wedding, but in reality the gathering is for everyone to be able to say goodbye to the grandmother without actually letting her know the truth.

It’s a fascinating premise and based on a true story (or based on an actual lie, as the film puts it). Showing aspects of Chinese culture we rarely get to see, the film takes us on a journey to China as we see modern life and urban development. How accurate it really is, I can’t attest to, and there are times that it feels like there should be more or that something is more complex and we’re being given the fortune cookie version, so to speak. The film does steer clear of politics, so that is not a factor here.

This is a beautiful film not just through visual aesthetics but also on a character level. We see how each character faces the impending death of the grandmother differently, such as the daughter-in-law being very matter of fact about it while her husband (the grandmother’s son) is being torn up inside, all while the wise and experienced grandmother continues to dispense advice, oblivious to her diagnosis. It details the variety of relationships we can develop in our life as no two relationships are the same, but they all still love each other despite some distance between certain relatives. There’s something that, despite the comedic premise (it’s sort of a comedy that’s not particularly funny), is very grounded and very real. I couldn’t help but see some of my own relationships reflected on the screen.

Beautiful, heartbreaking, and at the same time somewhat hopeful, “The Farewell” comes highly recommended.

Lulu Wang shares an emotional part of her personal life by delivering a beautiful, heartfelt story about her grandmother. Even though The Farewell sticks the landing perfectly, not all of the second act’s storylines captivated me, especially the whole wedding narrative. However, Awkwafina offers a fantastic performance, as well as the rest of the cast. Alex Weston’s score elevates a lot of moments, and the drama-comedy balance is on-point.

This movie is described as a comedy-drama and it is. But I didn’t have many laugh out loud moments. The humor is situational mainly: the writers work up to those moments that make you smile, either because you remember a similar moment in your life, or else because you can’t imagine a similar moment.

As happens so often, the story is based on real events. I saw where one review title said it is heartbreaking, but I didn’t see that at all. The movie is fairly uplifting in that it shows the strengths of a family that values all of its members, particularly the very old, whose wisdom and experience aren’t as well received in many American families.

When I think about it, nothing definitive seems to happen in the film: no crisis, no climax of action, but this lack of great drama didn’t detract from enjoying the movie. It is all about the journey, not the destination. Enjoy the trip.

Sputnik Online Subtitrat in Romana – [1080p]

There’s a genuine sense of creeping biological dread in “The Sputnik”.

Obviously, the immediate point of gravity for this film is Ridley Scotts 1979 film “Alien”. Let me start by saying the resemblance is only superifcal. This is very much its own film. Unlike “Alien” that ramps up the pace as the terror increases, The Sputnik is a slow burn sci fi. Yes, its an alien monster mash up but utlimately its as much psychological, as it is literal.

Does it work? Well, sort of. There’s some moments of genuine tension and terror, as well as a sickening sense of what people are capable of doing, to each other. Who’s the real monster is a question that sticks its ugly head up.

Action is on offer too but its very brief and over almost before it begins. Whats left is interesting but does not serve up enough “bite” on the action or psychological terror front, to really amount to more than a entree, when a main is called for.

6/10 from me.
Egor Abramenko’s movie puts the characters in perilous situations where no answer seems like the right answer, leaving you wanting to know what happens next, and keeping the audience engaged. Although it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, ‘Sputnik’ is an effective monster flick that touches upon human nature and the moral choices people have to make when it comes to life and death.

If you watched the excellent “Life” sci-fi horror thriller, this is its spiritual sequel. A cosmonaut returns with an alien life form in this slow-burn Russian export.
Wow. There is a lot to praise here.

The cinematography, score, and writing are all excellent. The acting is very strong, from Oksana Akinshina (who hasn’t changed a bit since playing a minor but important role in The Bourne Supremacy) to Pyotr Fyodorov, nearly the entire cast is excellent. 4 out of 5 mainly because I have no benchmark. Hope to see more excellent films like this from Russia in the next few years.
